The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
